Party with Mario!
Mario games come and go, but this one is a game that any loyal Nintendo fan shouldnt be without. The aim is simple. Players take it in turns to move around a game board collecting stars as they go in order to defeat the evil Bowser. A variety of boards await the players, ranging from a tropical island to Marios castle amongst the clouds. But what makes a computerised board game more fun than a real life one?

Well, the Mario humour, familiar characters, obstacles that spring up out of the blue to stop you getting that all important star, the bright and colourful graphics, the ability to steal from your opponent, hilarious mini games and much much MUCH more which make the game so unique and enjoyable. Though the graphics arent visually stunning, the hand drawn backgrounds are well done and never fail to bore you. Even with all this, it would be a very average game if it werent for the 50 different mini games that players can take part in. The large variety of mini-games makes a nice mix, and you wont often encounter the same mini-game twice in the same game. The variety is important, and will keep you coming back for more, guaranteed. They truly are a multiplayer treat and is one of the reasons why the game has spawned 3 sequels. And if that isnt enough, there are secret items to be bought once you gain enough coins from the game. But even with the standard rules, every game is never the same and will keep you playing it long after youve unlocked every mini-game, every item, every secret board and even completed the game.

Not all games are perfect however and one downside to Mario Party its habit of destroying controllers and hands. There are a number of mini-games that require you to rotate the control stick around very quickly and when done repeatedly will knacker out the stick over time. Another bad point is the one player mode. The game lacks somewhat, because it plays identically to the multiplayer version except with computer opponents instead of human, the obvious downside is the mini-games are less fun and you feel picked on by the computer players. But these are only minor faults (it is a multiplayer game afterall) and if had been worked on, the game may have deserved a five star rating. For groups of two, three or four people though, Mario Party is a Nintendo 64 classic, and while not perfect, is a solid multiplayer game and a legend in its own right.

Rotate that stick... faster.... FASTER!
A Mario board game? On the N64? On paper, rather an odd idea. In practice, arguably the most original game on the N64 for a long time. Addicitve and infinitely playable, the mini-games are often nothing short of inspired (there are a few duds, but thats to be expected of a game this size). The main problem is the stars given out on a (virtually) random basis at the end of the game, making you feel slightly cheated. That said, this is a stunning game, one which youll have all your friends addicted to in a verys hort space of time. Astounding.

3 days to go
First problem on Christmas morning was 1 game - no expansion pack. When shops opened on Boxing Day then discovered that these were as rare as hens teeth ! Eventually got around it by buying Donkey Kong 64 (which came with the pack) but blew more money than I had intended. One week into the game - three dungeons down - and beginning to get the hang of it. I wouldnt have liked to have played it without doing Ocarina of Time first. Less structured than Ocarina of Time - which (I hope) explains the number of times we travelled to some obscure point and discovered we did not have every single one of the pre-requisities for that stage. The dungeons we thought easier than Ocarina of Time, and brought back memories of ZELDA on the NES and SNES. Having tackled those dungeons I am sure made these easier - although the bosses are definitely harder. I remember complaints about Ocarina of Time (by experienced gamers) beeing too easy - as we struggled through. These bosses are definitely harder - although we havent been beaten yet. The number of heart containers to collect is unbelievable - we have only managed 11 full containers this far - so I think by next year (i.e., 2002) we should be managing to get 20 full hearts.
